Description:Videorecordings of four female early NGT signers and one male early NGT signer engaging in free conversation in the clubhouse for the Deaf.
Logbook. The meeting of S023, S039, S040, S041 and S126 at 26 October 2011. Location: The recordings are in the pub of the clubhouse for the Deaf in Groningen. The signers are having conversations on the couch. The conversations between S023, S039 and S040 was planned. The presence of S041 and S126 later that evening was unexpected. Technical information: That part of the clubhouse where the signers are recorded is brightly lit. The records are steady and in front of the signers. The records starts with S023, S039 and S040. Later S041 and S126 draws up to the couch and a while later S126 leaves the conversation. The recordings ended with S023, S039, S040 and S041. S024 is present too, in the background out of view of the camera's, nearby recorder Merel van Zuilen. There are different kinds of conversations between the five signers. Sometimes it's up to two signers, sometimes three, sometimes four and sometimes all the five signers are having a conversation with each other. The duration of the records is about 3 hours.

Information from filled in backgrounddocument by S126: S041 is the younger sister of S126. S126 does know S23, S39 and S40 already, from the deaf community. S126 is the brother of the mother-in-law (S041) of S040. S126 is born deaf. S126 replied about his participation to the deaf community with a 'no'. S126 also mentioned the Meeting Centre for the Deaf as a manner to participate to the deaf community. S126 defines his sign skills as good. S126 does have 2 deaf brothers and 1 deaf sister but he didn't wrote it in his background document. The parents and grandparents of S126 are/were hearing and used speech only. >From S126's hearing environment one female cousin use/used sign language. Write: right hand. Preference hand for signing: right hand. S126 participates to the recordings of 28 September 2011 too.
Information from filled in backgrounddocument by S041: S126 is the brother of S041. S041 does know her other conversation partners (except S0126) about 20 years. S041 is the mother-in-law of S040. S041 did met her conversation partners (except S0126) by sport. S041 is born deaf. S041 participates in the deaf community by sport, deaf friends, Meeting Centre for the Deaf and work. S041 defines her sign skills as very good. S041 does know one other sign language: Spanisch sign language. S041 has 3 deaf brothers. >From S041's hearing environment one female cousin use/used sign language. Write: right hand. Preference hand for signing: right hand. S041 participates to the recordings of 28 September 2011 too.
Information from filled in backgrounddocument by S039: S039 does know her conversation partners (S040 and S023) for 42 years and 36 years. S039 did met her conversation partners for the first time at the boarding-school and from school, in the same grade. S039 became deaf when she was 2;6 (year;month). S039 participates in the deaf community by deaf friends, the Meeting Centre for the Deaf and by work. S039 defines her sign skills as very good. S122 does know from other sign languages a bit from several countries. >From S039's hearing environment her colleague's and her own children uses sign language. Write: right hand. S040 did met her conversation partners for the first time at school. S041 is the mother-in-law for S040. S040 is deaf from birth. S040 participates in the deaf community by sport, internet, deaf friends, the Meeting Centre for the Deaf and work. S040 defines her signing skills as very good. S040 does know other sign languages: - local sign language (Groningse gebarentaal); - Spanish (Valenciano); - International Sign Language although ISL is not a real existing language to S040's opinion. The hard-of-hearing father of S040 didn't went to a deaf school. >From S040 hearing environment her elder sister, brother, collegaes, own child, one uncle and uses/used sign language. S040 does have more deaf familymembers beyond home. (She didn't wrote that in the background document but told it to the recorder). Write: right hand. Preference hand for signing: right hand.
Information from filled in backgrounddocument by S023: S039 and S040 are friends of S023. S023 does know S040 for about 30 years and S039 for about 35 years. S023 did met S040 at school and with swim for the first time. S023 did met S039 at the boarding school for the first time. S023 is born deaf. S023 did learn sign language from her sister. (That's the only vink she made. To the opinion of the deaf recorder Merel van Zuilen S023 did also learn sign language from other deaf children at school and at the boarding school). S023 participates in the deaf community by sport. (That's the only vink she made. To the opinion of the deaf recorder Merel van Zuilen S023 does also participates bij contact with deaf friends, visits to the Meeting Centre for the deaf and by work). S023 defines her sign skills as very good. S023 doesn't know other sign languages. S023 has hearing parents and grandparents. One sister of S023 is deaf too. >From S023's hearing environment one hearing elder sister uses/used sign language (recorder Merel van Zuilen: or is it the deaf elder sister?). Two hearing brothers of S023 uses/used sign language, the younger hearing brother uses/used it more fluent than the elder hearing brother. Write: left hand. Preference hand for signing: 'I don't know'.
