Description:A short narrative about the linguistic situation of the Lokono and their problems connected to the issue of landrights, finished with an appeal to the inhabitants of Suriname.
This project aims at creating a lasting record of multimedia texts documenting the speech of the Lokono, the speakers of a moribund Arawakan language. Lokono is still spoken by few elderly members of the communities in French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana and Venezuela. However, the geographical proximity of the Lokono settlements to the urban and coastal Creole settlements, exposes them to their constant influence. Speaking mostly the official language or the creole lingua franca, the non-Amerindian communities propel the process of linguistic and cultural erosion among the Lokono. In cooperation with the Lokono communities, we intend to document and describe the Lokono language, focusing on such aspects as dialectal differences, the grammar of space and the native terminology for the local fauna and flora. The outcomes of the project will include a collection of audio-visual recordings, a publication on the perception and expression of space in Lokono and a lexicographical publication on the indigenous knowledge of the local plants and animals.
