Description:		'The Monkey Congo and the Thunder God' (El Mono Congo y El Rey del Trueno) There are approximately 1,500 native Bocotas living in Veraguas, Bocas del Toro and Chiriquí provinces in western Panama. The dialect of Bocotás that is spoken here is the Chiriquí dialect. 'The oral narrative of the Bocotás reflects wide thematic variety, in accordance with its contents, the totality of the stories can be situated in two great spheres: mythological and non-mythological. Mythological narratives can be subdivided into three types: a) narratives about mythical beings, in which humans occasionally also participate; b) narratives of mythological beings and animals, and c) narratives about animals. "The narratives in which both mythical beings and animals participate, or those in which only animals appear, are situated at a time when humans and animals possessed the ability to communicate, reiterate the development of a situation in which a some physical characteristic of a determined animal species is modified" (Margery Peña y Rodríguez Antencio, 1992). The recording is one in a series made in 1988 by Francisco Rodríquez, who immigrated to Costa Rica from Panama in 1980.
		'El Mono Congo y El Rey del Trueno' "Los bocotás son aproximadamente 1.500 (Gunn y Gunn, 1974;31) que viven en las provincias de Veraguas, Bocas del Toro y en el extremo occidental de Panamá. "La narrativa oral de los Bocotás de Chiriquí posee una amplia variedad temática. No obstante, de acuerdo con sus contenidos, la totalidad de los relatos puede situarse en dos grandes ámbitos: relatos mitológicos y relatos no mitológicos. Los relatos mitológicos pueden subdividirse en tres tipos, a saber: a) relatos de seres míticos, en los que ocasionalmente participan también humanos; b) relatos de seres míticos animales, y c) relatos de animales...' "...Los relatos de este ámbito donde participan seres míticos y animales, y aquellos en que participan sólo animales, al situarse en un tiempo en que hombres y animales poseían la facultad de comunicarse, reiteran el desarrollo de una situación en la que una determinada especie animal resulta modificada en alguna característica de su fí-sico. El mono congo y el Rey del Trueno es un ejemplo de estos relatos." (Margery Peña y Rodríguez Antencio, 1992). Esta grabación es una de un serie de grabaciones hecha en 1988 por Francisco Rodríguez Atencio, quien emigró a Costa Rica desde Panamá en 1980.
