Description:The LESLLA corpus is collected in the framework of the NWO (Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research) project Stagnation in L2 acquisition: Under the spell of the L1? Eight Turkish and seven Moroccan female learners of Dutch have practiced their Dutch during three semesters. In this time they were audio-taped nine times during 2-2.5 hours while doing several experimental and semi-spontaneous tasks, from highly controlled (a sentence repetition task and a discourse-induced completion task) to rather free film retelling tasks. All tasks with spoken language have been brought together in this corpus, the name of which is due to the fact that all participants have little education varying from no schooling at all to maximally seven years of schooling. This fact makes them low-educated adult language and literacy learners, since 2005 known as LESLLA learners, a much under-researched group of L2 learners. Contrary to the learners of the ESF corpus (see Perdue 1993) the present adult learners were all women and were attending school, that is to say, they were learning Dutch in a center for adult education. None of them were very fast learners, none of them learned Dutch under optimal conditions, but some did better than others, who clearly had serious problems. The native language seemed to be a serious obstacle to them. Articles making use of the data are: 2009 The role of IS in the acquisition of finiteness by adult Turkish learners of Dutch.
