Lukong & Untong) 4. 157-264 Lukong & Untong. 34-42 5. 265-278 L & U talk 'tea'. 28-30 6. 283-338 Lukong interviewed. v. key 50 7. 338-392 Untong goes to Piah. 51-56 Tawai 8. 393-432 Three Semnam women chat 21/1/79. 122-128 Several of the recordings on this cassette tape are transcribed from p.3 in Notebook 11 (from Jan-Feb 1979), and there is some metadata on p.50 of Notebook 11. The place of recording, Dala (or Dɛnlaaʔ), is located at the mouth of the Piah river and was home to various Lanoh subgroups plus some Temiar. At the time this wasn't on a proper road, and Benjamin saw wild elephants on this trip (who had destroyed the swidden the night before). This recording was made during Benjamin's first deliberate trip to work with Lanoh and Semnam speakers in Lanoh and Semnam country. Some years earlier Benjamin had collected names of Lanoh varieties and the purpose of this field trip was to try to sort out the names of the varieties. The varieties looked at are: LY = Lanoh Yir, LJ = Lanoh Jɛŋjɛŋ, SA = Sabʉm; Semnam is separate from these 3 Lanoh varieties (see p.5 of Notebook 11). Note on Lanoh Kobak (from Malay kobang): Benjamin had long suspected that this was actually a Temiar dialect, close to what Schebesta published as Temiar in his 'Grammatical Sketch of the Ple-Temer Language' book from JRAS. The variety described by Schebesta has likely since disappeared. Benjamin and G. Diffloth posit that there was previously a cline of varieties between Temiar and Lanoh that has now been taken over by Temiar. Further note from p.200 of Notebook 11: yiir is supposed to mean 1DU.Excl 'us two but not you' in that variety. Jɛŋjɛŋ is said to be the name of a mountain. | |
