Title:The Zaza wedding ritual and the German diaspora - A comparative ethnographic study of modern Mediterranean to ancient Biblical practices
Abstract:In history the Zaza people of Eastern Anatolia went through times of struggle and oppression as a small scale society under national powers. Since the 1960s a huge migration wave to the Western cities of Turkey and to Europe (mainly Germany, Sweden, and France) took place. The Diaspora became a part of the Zaza culture. Migration was due to material considerations such as recruitment as foreign labourers, asking for political asylum because of military and police interference, and through the reunification of extended families. These reasons became foundational to the different ways of life to which the Zaza people adapted in the Diaspora. Many studies of the migration processes, the change of lifestyle, and the challenges for the Zaza culture and language are available nowadays. The focus of this paper is wedding rituals in the Diaspora. This area of life contrasts to some extent with those of the migration countries and the changes that go with them regarding the wedding practices in the homeland. At the same time the adherence to traditions as a way of bridging the gap between the Diaspora and the homeland is fascinating too. Some practices present themselves as so essential that they reflect some of the core values of the Zaza culture. A closer ethnographical look is given to the performance of rituals and the rules of respect and courtesy between the main participants of several weddings. A comparison is made with wedding practices in the West, mainly Germany, and also to the Kurmanji speaking ethnicity.
