Title:Orthography as social practice: Is there a role for the linguist?
Abstract:If orthography is a social practice, the role of the local community is paramount in its development. The orthography will signal how the community sees itself vis-à-vis other groups. It will reflect who will be using it and for what. There is, however, also a role for the linguist. The linguist can see non-salient aspects of the orthography that are not apparent to users. By working together, the community and the linguist can resolve issues that neither can resolve alone. In addition, by focusing on a concrete orthography rather than an abstract phonological analysis, the linguist can make it possible for the community to participate in a broader range of activities involved in orthography development.
