Documentation of Eibela
Contributor (researcher):Grant
Contributor (translator):Stalone
Coverage:Papua New Guinea
Date:2015-07-14
Description:This is a census of the residents of Lake Campbell, including general language proficiency, name, and house location.
This project consists in the documentation of Eibela, also called Aimele (ISO-639 AIL), as part of a PhD project at James Cook University which will ultimately result in a grammar of the language along with a dictionary and a corpus of texts. Eibela is a severely endangered language with 300 speakers in Lake Campbell, Western Province in Papua New Guinea.
To conduct this census, the researcher Grant Aiton and an assistant, Stalone Sapai Ugei, went from house to house and documented the names of each inhabitant along with each language they were actively proficient in (able to speak and understand), and each language they were passively proficient in (able to understand, but not speak). If a resident was unable to offer a self-assessment of their language abilities, Stalone offered his opinion, which was noted. The results of this census are provided as a pdf scan of the researcher’s field notebook. Two text files are in fact .gpx files which have had the file extensions changed from .gpx to .txt for archival. These .gpx files were created with a Garmin GPS unit and detail the locations of the houses mentioned in the census notes.
Stalone is an Eibela man living in Lake Campbell, and is aiding Grant as a translator and local guide who is intimately familiar with the residents of Lake Campbell. Grant Aiton is a PhD researcher conducting the census in order to research the Eibela language.
