Description:In this bundle, Ago and Ayom, elderly ladies of Buragaon, prepare rice wine. The videos contain footages of the entire process – from grinding the corn to drinking the wine. In hru_1224_rice_wine_00_trans, Siba, Ayom's daughter, asks her mother to explain to her the process of making rice wine. In this staged event the two ladies explain to the young girl how the rice wine is made. In the video hru_1224_rice_wine_trans_07, I (Vijay) joined the ladies in grinding the corn and have a nice little conversation with them. The rest of the videos show footages of the actual preparation of the rice wine. Although the ladies are initially camera-conscious, later on they break into spontaneous conversations and songs. These ladies are among the few in the village who are still skilled at grinding corn using millstone. In singing the songs and in grinding, they told me, they were reliving their memories of their childhood, these sounds were heard every morning. In the olden days rice wine was made using equipment entirely made in the village, made of bamboo and gourd. Today, as you can see in the videos, there are plastic buckets and the improvised use of nylon bags used as filters. The event was recorded using Canon XA 20 video camera and the Superlux stereo microphone. The microphone was connected directly to the video camera through XLR cords and was suspended from the ceiling. This was to avoid the loud noise of the grinding stone and the movement of people and vessels on the floor which would have drowned the conversation. The flipside of this set up is that the sound is somewhat echoey.
