Description:In 2013, the local authorities of Jimnyeong had started re-introducing the so-called Dojje (actually Dosje, with 'dos' meaning 'pig', and 'je' meaning 'ritual'), a local anmistic ritual where a pig is sacrificed to the spirits, and then consumed by all participants of the ritual afterwards. Since animistic rituals had been forbidden under the military reign of the 70s, people had done this ritual clandestinely at their homes, and it is since two years ago that the local authorities have decided to bring the ritual back out into the public. During the ritual, people can bow in front of the table of offerings, and village people also submit papers with wishes on them so that the shaman can pray to the spirits for their fulfillment. SSS1 is a well-known shaman on Jeju Island and is very active in promoting the indigenous animistic practices on their own right, doing a range of rituals in different regions of Jeju Province. You can see how her image is projected on a bigger screen, and she has a wireless lavalier mic taped on her cheek, which projects the sound to big speakers. A lot of local amateur researchers and writers are present with their own recording devices, with the local television occupying the central recording spot. Although the recording quality is not the best, SUK1 considered it to be interesting to have such a recording in his corpus. The offering of a pig is interesting for the study of Jeju culture, because usually when one visits a shrine, it is customary not to eat pig meat a couple of days beforehand, yet in the region around Jimnyeong, at this particular ritual, pig meat plays an important role.
