Description:Phalu is the ritual performance for those who are extremely ill. Because it is believed that the ill person is possessed by an evil spirit, the offering must be a dog or a pig, but regardless of whether a dog or pig is sacrificed, the sacrificed animal will always be referred to as a dog. The shaman begins the ritual events by building a small bamboo house for the evil spirit to reside temporally while the performance takes place. The chanting includes stories about the creation of the world including plants, animals, and all living things. The shaman chants about banana leaves and how fibre bracelets that ward off evil spirits are made. He then invites all celestial beings and the spirits of ancestors to return, and he offers them rice fermented beer. The shaman then offers the body of the sacrificed animal to the Phalu spirt in return for the individual’s good health and wellbeing.
