Description:Messele Lipaato and Allayo Lanc'o sing songs, which Messele accompanies on his lyre. Four songs are performed: 1. Kaa'ando (file 001), 2. Hollale Lale, a wedding song (file 002), 3. Addisaabi lukkine ('I have travelled to Addis Ababa') (file 004) and 4. Shulshula ('bamboo flute') (file 003 and 005). The shulshula-song is performed twice, the first performance was, however, disturbed by music from the neighbourhood. The photo linked to this session shows Messele on the left and Allayo on the right.
Messele is a farmer from Awra Soosta and a passionate musician. He plays the lyre and the bamboo-flute (shulshula). He is the nephew of another lyre player, Lanc'o Lodo, who was recorded in the project. Messele is a father of small children.
Allayo and Messele are cousin. Allayo accompanied Messele on the day of the recording.
Yvonne Treis is a linguist and works on Ethiopian languages at CNRS in France.
