Description:Messele Lipaato and Allayo Lanc'o perform five lyre songs, Messele is the lyre player and the leading voice throughout the performance. The first three songs are sung in Baskeet: 1. a song called kaa'ando, 2. the wedding song hollale lale, 3. a song in the shulshula-rhythm. File 004 and 005 contains songs that are sung in the neighbouring Gayl language (Galila Aari). The title of these songs are bona-bonde (file 004) and tey-teyre gaabilo (file 005). At the end of the session Messele demonstrates the Gayl tuning of the lyre strings (file 006) and the Baskeet tuning of the lyre strings (file 007) by plucking the strings from left to right (when facing the lyre) = from the top down (when holding the lyre).
Messele is a farmer from Awra Soosta and a passionate musician. He plays the lyre and the bamboo-flute (shulshula). He is the nephew of another lyre player, Lanc'o Lodo, who was recorded in the project. Messele is a father of small children.
Yvonne Treis is a linguist and works on Ethiopian languages at CNRS in France.
Allayo and Messele are cousin. Allayo accompanied Messele on the day of the recording.
