Coverage:Ethiopia
Date:2012-01-17
Description:C'annak'e Makonan plays six lyre songs: 1. kaa'ooda, 2. kaldi baaba, 3. hawpi, 4. sibts'ire, 5. bambane (a narrative song), and 6. yeehi baaba. Finally, he demonstrates two rhythms on the shulshula-flute whose names are still to be determined.
C'annak'e Makonan can play the zimbi and the shulshula. He brought his shulshula to be recoreded, but a shulshula-performance requires 5 people and 5 flutes. As two people of his group have become Protestant, they are only left with three members.
Yvonne Treis is a linguist and works on Ethiopian languages at CNRS in France.
