Description:This discussion happens after the story FU0011, in a group story telling session. It occurred at Jinzhegan’ s home at Jinman Village on July 27, 2017. Prior to the event, an announcement was made and publicized in community to invite villagers to come and share their Bani stories. Dinner is provided and the story tellers are promised to be compensated for their work. More than ten people shared their stories and some told multiple stories. People sat around fire pit and contributed to each other’s story. Other villagers walked in and out. The whole session lasted about 2 hours. The session was filmed by Jingqi Fu (principle researcher) and Yang Zhouhui (consultant+assistant) using Sony Camcorder Fdr-ax100 4k. The whole session was mostly in Bani, the principle researcher hardly talked.
Lemo is considered a Northern Branch of the Bai language. It is spoken by 12,000 people in the Nujiang Valley of the Yunnan Province in China. Lemo culture and language faces a decline due to the encroachment of Lisu and Mandarin Chinese. The current project aims at working with the Language Community to document its language in its dynamic daily uses and cultural performances. It will produce a working orthography, a language learning manual, partially annotated digital audio and video materials that represent the cultural and linguistic practices, a dictionary, and a sketch grammar.
