Description:Alice Votaia weaves a pera basket made from coconut leaves. The coconut leaves were cut from a coconut tree by her husband, Selwyn, the afternoon before she wove the basket. The pera basket has ritual significance as it is used in bride-price exchange events to give custom money to the bride's family from the groom's family. It is made to be carried on the head by women. See recording 26 by Titus Sikua for a description of the functions and importance of this basket.
