| Description: | The short recording features a man from one of the families who live at the Santo Rumi shrine, an area which attracts many people from around the region for rituals linked to the springs whose waters are said to have special properties. He provides some mountain names: Tigli Philu, Cruz Urcu, Patiapamba, Tigua Urcu, Taquiza Urcu, Yacu Thimbu, Sachacuchupamba, Quillu Urco, Atolapamba, and many more. It is possible to get to Angamarca on foot in one day. On the 28th of December the priostes come to bathe the child statue of the Santo Rumi, and by 6 of January a large festival forms. | |
| Ecuadorian Highland Quichua is a distinct Quechuan language unique to the Ecuadorian Andes, unintelligible with any other language in the Quechuan family. It is currently undergoing rapid shift to Spanish in all regions where it is spoken, but the most extreme language shift is found in Province of Pichincha where in most indigenous communities the only speakers are of advanced age. This project continues an ongoing effort to document Ecuadorian Highland Quichua across multiple provinces. This phase of the project focuses on areas of high language endangerment in Pichincha Province and bordering areas of neighboring provinces. Participants from multiple communities collaborate in filming conversations and activities including spoken Quichua in order to create a register of linguistic diversity across different dialects and micro-varieties. The recordings are then transcribed and translated to Spanish by a team of native speaker researchers. | ||
