Description:In this interview Elsa speaks with her grandmother about local life. The initial conversation touches on agriculture, and the woman explains how she used to have to walk to places like Guantugloma (Kichwa name) to move her products. Typical Cotopaxi pronunciation seen here includes the aspirates /kh/ and /ph/, and widespread voicing of stops; here “chiri” and “chagra” not begin with /ts/ as in the area just to the south. Local morphological features include the -wa diminutive, -pash (also) reduced to -sh,, -rka (past) reduced to -ra. At around 8:20 description of an earthquake uses ideophones “thalag thalag”. Some discussion of mountain names mentions Padre Rumi, a “tayta” masculine mountain related to a story of a priest, Yana Urco, gender unknown and others with interesting pronunciations like “Phanta Rumi”. At 10:00 Elsa produces a clear negative existential gesture when saying she does not have any sheep, compared to the past when she used to go up to the mountains to the pastures. At around 18:00 Floyd enters the frame and asks about the tuber oca. Later discussions cover some greetings and polite expressions and other topics.
Ecuadorian Highland Quichua is a distinct Quechuan language unique to the Ecuadorian Andes, unintelligible with any other language in the Quechuan family. It is currently undergoing rapid shift to Spanish in all regions where it is spoken, but the most extreme language shift is found in Province of Pichincha where in most indigenous communities the only speakers are of advanced age. This project continues an ongoing effort to document Ecuadorian Highland Quichua across multiple provinces. This phase of the project focuses on areas of high language endangerment in Pichincha Province and bordering areas of neighboring provinces. Participants from multiple communities collaborate in filming conversations and activities including spoken Quichua in order to create a register of linguistic diversity across different dialects and micro-varieties. The recordings are then transcribed and translated to Spanish by a team of native speaker researchers.
Sessions include conversation and activities, semi-structured in collaboration with participants.
