Description:Lucy explains how the eBario project got started and brought the internet, telephones and better telecommunications to Bario. In this recording, Lucy recounts some of the problems faced by local residents in terms of communicating with the wider world back in the late 1990s. She explains how you would sometimes have to wait for hours to use the radio call and letters would often arrive late, even if they only came from Marudi or Miri, the nearest towns. She then describes her first meeting with the Vice Chancellor of University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Datuk Zawawi, who promised to help bring the internet to Bario by conducting largescale research. The first step of the project was a meeting with community elders, including the then Penghulu, Henry Jala @ Nepu'un Beruh, and Pemanca, Gerawat Aran @ Ngimat Ayu, village headmen and other interested parties. They agreed that if it could be done properly then they should go ahead and do it. Subsequently, Lucy explains how a company called Comserv provided some computers that were initially given to the school. As the principal at the time, her first priority was to teach the children how to use computers so that they wouldn't be behind when they went to school in Marudi after the age of 14. So they initially started computer clubs, which got the schoolchildren excited but also the people in Bario more generally. The story is continued in Part 2 (BAR21082014CH_06). The following equipment was used: Zoom H4N, lavallier mic, wind gag, Canon EOS 60D, Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens. The recording is in mono and wav format.
