| Description: | Newman Andres sings his Tobian language song Pieri Worr (Turtle Beach) at Long Island, Malakal, Koror. He composed this song on board a ship bringing him from Tobi Island to Koror. It urges the listener to remember all the good times on Tobi’s special beach. Both the song and the beach are well known and loved by many people. Far from being a traditional Tobian song, Pieri Worr uses a contemporary format to express something like nostalgia for an earlier and simpler way of life. | Documenting Ramari Hatohobei (literally the Tobian language of Tobi), a severely endangered Micronesian language. Tobi is one of the Southwest Islands of the Republic of Palau, a Micronesian nation in the western Pacific. Severely endangered, Tobian is currently spoken by approximately 150 people. Tobian and the dialects of Sonsorol, Merir, and Pulo Anna, the other three Southwest Islands, are closely related to the languages spoken in the outer islands of Yap and Chuuk. | ||
