Description:On May 16, 2014, Peter W. Black recorded this video at the Belau National Museum outdoor terrace, in Koror, Palau. Barbara W. Black was also present. This was the second attempt to record Sabino Sakarias telling about the time he got lost at sea off Tobi in a small canoe and was finally rescued by a Filipino fishing boat and taken to General Santos City in the Philippines from where he flew home. The first attempt was made in November 2013, but no usable audio was recorded. Sabino agreed to do a free translation of this recording in time for submission to ELAR, but failed to do so. Another version of this story is told in David (Prince) Antonio: Sabino’s Adventure. A transcription and expanded discussion by Peter W. Black is included here at tb07-04322-ssa-2014-05-16.pdf. A photograph of Peter W. Black and Sabino Sakarias is here at tb07-03973-ssa-2014-05-16.jpg. Photograph Barbara W. Black 2014.
Documenting Ramari Hatohobei (literally the Tobian language of Tobi), a severely endangered Micronesian language. Tobi is one of the Southwest Islands of the Republic of Palau, a Micronesian nation in the western Pacific. Severely endangered, Tobian is currently spoken by approximately 150 people. Tobian and the dialects of Sonsorol, Merir, and Pulo Anna, the other three Southwest Islands, are closely related to the languages spoken in the outer islands of Yap and Chuuk.
