Description:On the morning of October 11, 2014 Peter and Barbara Black visited Sebastian Marino at his home in Araki, Eang, Koror, Palau to record Sebastian’s thoughts. At the time, Sebastian was the elected representative of Hatohobei State to the national legislature of Palau. In compliance with the law that forbids traditional chiefs from sitting as delegate, Sebastian had recently given up the traditional title of chief, given him by his adopted father, the previous chief. Out of his experience as both a traditional chief and elected leader, Sebastian chose three important Tobian values he feels are in danger of being lost. A discussion of this session by Peter W. Black is included here at tb44-04346-smb-2014-10-11.pdf. Photographs included are Peter W. Black and Sebastian Marino, tb44-03982-smb-2014-10-11.jpg, and Sebastian Maino, tb44-04155-smb-2014-10-11.jpg. Photographs Babara W. Black 2014.
Documenting Ramari Hatohobei (literally the Tobian language of Tobi), a severely endangered Micronesian language. Tobi is one of the Southwest Islands of the Republic of Palau, a Micronesian nation in the western Pacific. Severely endangered, Tobian is currently spoken by approximately 150 people. Tobian and the dialects of Sonsorol, Merir, and Pulo Anna, the other three Southwest Islands, are closely related to the languages spoken in the outer islands of Yap and Chuuk.
