| Description: | On June 4, 2014 Peter W. Black filmed Sisma Andrew and her sisters, Keturdis (Ketty) Lorenzo and Regina Andrew, telling the story of the discovery of Tobi island and discussing traditions and customs. The Ramoparuhe story is told here. Rules for chiefly succession, mourning the dead, choosing marriage partners, and other traditional matters are discussed. Also present were Diana Andres, wife of Sisma’s son Curtis, and Regina’s small grandson, Atila. This video was made at Sisma’s house in Echang, Koror, Palau. | Documenting Ramari Hatohobei (literally the Tobian language of Tobi), a severely endangered Micronesian language. Tobi is one of the Southwest Islands of the Republic of Palau, a Micronesian nation in the western Pacific. Severely endangered, Tobian is currently spoken by approximately 150 people. Tobian and the dialects of Sonsorol, Merir, and Pulo Anna, the other three Southwest Islands, are closely related to the languages spoken in the outer islands of Yap and Chuuk. | ||
