Domiciano-Andrew-on-chiefs-ghosts-sorcerers
Ramari Hatohobei
Contributor:Domiciano Andrew
Contributor (recorder):Peter W Black
Coverage:Palau
Date:2014-05-25
Description:This recording was made in Echang, in Koror at the house of Wayne Andrew. At the time of this interview, Domiciano suffered from a bad leg and was waiting to be sent to Taiwan for surgery. He was bed bound and occupying a room in his nephew Wayne’s house, being cared for by the women of that house, especially his sister, Wayne’s mother Regina Andrew. Until recently he was the Hatohobei State Historian, as part of a program under the national government’s Bureau of Arts and Culture. He is widely recognized as knowledgeable about the past; some consider him the ought-to-be chief of the island. Domiciano describes some chiefly history as well as several cultural features of the pre-Christian Tobi world. A more detailed description and discussion of this session is included here at tb74-04246-daa-2014-05-25.pdf. Recorded: 2014-05-25
Documenting Ramari Hatohobei (literally the Tobian language of Tobi), a severely endangered Micronesian language. Tobi is one of the Southwest Islands of the Republic of Palau, a Micronesian nation in the western Pacific. Severely endangered, Tobian is currently spoken by approximately 150 people. Tobian and the dialects of Sonsorol, Merir, and Pulo Anna, the other three Southwest Islands, are closely related to the languages spoken in the outer islands of Yap and Chuuk.
