Description:Third session of the sixth monthly recording cycle with Man Kumar (child 4 in the Child Language Development Study).
The aim of the project is to provide a rich linguistic and ethnographic documentation of two highly endangered but almost totally undocumented languages in eastern Nepal, Chintang and Puma. These languages belong to the Kiranti family of Tibeto-Burman. Chintang is spoken by the Chintang Rai in Chintang Village Development Committee (VDC) of Dhankuta district. Puma is spoken by the Puma Rai in Diplung, Mauwabote and Pauwasera VDCs, to the south of Khotang bazar in Khotang district. In this session, Man Kumar plays with feathers, he plays with a round piece made of plastic. Around 0:40, he goes to his neighbour's yard and he plays there walking here and there.
Less than 15 utterances are in Nepali and all others are in Chintang language.
Man Kumar is the target child, Ganga is his mother, Nanda Kumar is his father. Pandu is his uncle, Jagat is the man of next village, chhetri gaun, Ram and Laxman are his younger siblings, Man Kumari (our local assistant) and Phul Kumari are the neighbours and Goma is the collector and the annotator of this session. ps there are two such participants whose name we couldn't know, they don't appear in the view but 2 -3 times they speak, other participants has addressed them as 'Kancha' and 'Saĩla' , we have coded them with P1? and P2? in toolbox
Pandu is Man Kumar's elder paternal uncle and a neighbour and friend of Saphal's father. He has a grocery shop at Panchakanya in Chintang.
Ganga Kumari is the mother of the child4, Man Kumar. She has altogether 7 children. She is a housewife and a farmer. She is also known as the 'Jamlema maili'. She is Lengmuk Rai, a clan of Bantawa and married to Puma Rai.
Dil Kumari is a neighbour of Man Kumar's. Her home is 4 minutes uphill from his. She is a housewife, a farmer and a seasonal businesswoman.
Jagat Bahadur is a 19 year old Chhetri and a neighbour of Man Kumar's. Chintang is not his mother tongue.
Goma Banjade Rai is the Assistant Researcher in Child Language Acquisition and Child Language Development.
Laxman is one of the two youngest brothers of Man Kumar: Ram is his twin brother.
Ram is one of the two youngest brothers of Man Kumar: Laxman is his twin brother.
Man Kumari Rai, also known as 'sanhili' or 'saili' in her family and in her neighborhood, belongs to the Yupuchung, a clan of Bantawa Rai. She is the neighbor of all our target childrens' families the direct neighbor of Kamala's family. She is our local assistant as well. She is a student. She has passed 10th grade.
Nanda Kumar, also called 'Prem' and 'Gaurung Sai?la' in the village, is the father of Man Kumar. He is a farmer. Sometimes, he works for wage and sometimes he works as a porter.
Man Kumar, also called 'Maila' in his family as he is the second son of his parents, is one of the target children in our recording. He is the fifth child of his parents and has 6 siblings. The child is very active. Most of the time he plays with other children.
Phul Kumari is a neighbour of Man Kumar's family. Her home is next to Man Kumars'. She is Kumar's mother. She has 4 daughters. She is a house wife and a farmer.
