Description:First session of the fourteenth recording cycle with Kalpana (child 3 of Child Language Development Study).
The aim of the project is to provide a rich linguistic and ethnographic documentation of two highly endangered but almost totally undocumented languages in eastern Nepal, Chintang and Puma. These languages belong to the Kiranti family of Tibeto-Burman. Chintang is spoken by the Chintang Rai in Chintang Village Development Committee (VDC) of Dhankuta district. Puma is spoken by the Puma Rai in Diplung, Mauwabote, Devisthan and Pauwasera VDCs, to the south of Khotang bazar in Khotang district. Both these districts are situated in the eastern hilly part of the country.http://www.cpdp.uzh.ch
This session is recorded on the veranda of Kalpana's home. Our language consultant Rikhi asks Kalpana a lot of things about her study. It has been recorded in a quite natural setting. The noise of insects and ducks can also be heard. When Ichchha suggests to read the book, Kalpana opens the book and says the name of the pictures in Chintang. Around 14:00, her mother asks Kalpana the names of the pictures.
Kalpana is the target child. Anita is her mother, Samjhana, Ranjana and Prithvi are her siblings. Jitendra, Dipendra and Rikhi are their neighbours. Ichchha and Manoj are the collectors of the session.
Our target child Kalpana, also called 'Kanchi' at home, is the youngest child of her parents and has three elder siblings. She is Kamala's cousin (daughter of younger paternal uncle).
Ichchha Purna Rai is the research assistant for the study of ethnography of Chintang.

She works as one of our regular language consultants and has been working as a research collaborator helping with grammatical analysis, transcriptions and translations. She is a college student doing a BEd in English and was in the third year when the project started. Both she and her parents are Chintang native speakers, but they are Bantawa by ethnicity. She has never left the area for a longer time.
Ranjana, also called 'Ranje' is the elder sister of Kalpana. She is the second child of her parents. She is a student in 1st grade. She takes care of her sister Kalpana in their mother's absence. She is Kamala's cousin (daughter of younger paternal uncle).
Samjhana, also called 'Samje' and 'Jethi', is the eldest sister of Kalpana. She is Kamala's cousin (daughter of younger paternal uncle). She is a student in 3rd grade. She helps her parents in the household, too.
Jitendra Rai is known as 'Jite' in the village. He is the neighbour of Kamala's and Kalpana's family. He is the son of Kamala's and Kalpana's younger granduncle's son. His mother is Newar and his father is Chintang Rai. He is a 1st grader.
Dipendra Rai is the neighbour of Kamala and Kalpana's family. He is a 1st grader.
Prithvi Narayan, also called 'Perte' and 'Pecce', is the elder brother of Kalpana. He is Kamala's cousin (younger paternal uncle's son). He is the only son of his parents. He sometimes goes to school with his elder siblings.
Man Kumari Rai, also known as 'sanhili' or 'saili' in her family and in her neighborhood, belongs to the Yupuchung, a clan of Bantawa Rai. She is the neighbor of all our target childrens' families the direct neighbor of Kamala's family. She is our local assistant as well. She is a student. She has passed 10th grade.
