Description:This recording was done in Pauwasera VDC, Tamdung. In this session, the speaker gives a descriptive account of the Puma ritual which is called 'khaliphenma'. The way of doing the puja, the role of the shaman, reasons for sacrificing a pig etc. are described in this session.
The aim of the project is to provide a rich linguistic and ethnographic documentation of two highly endangered but almost totally undocumented languages in eastern Nepal, Chintang and Puma. These languages belong to the Kiranti family of Tibeto-Burman. Chintang is spoken by the Chintang Rai in Chintang Village Development Committee (VDC) of Dhankuta district. Puma is spoken by the Puma Rai in Diplung, Mauwabote and Pauwasera VDCs, to the south of Khotang bazar in Khotang district. Both these districts are situated in the eastern hilly part of the country.http://www.cpdp.uzh.ch
Khaliphenma is one of the ritual festivals of the Puma people which generally is done once in six years. Puma worship the ancestors and offer a pig (khali bhog) and wish prosperity and the success of life in future. There are different steps to be taken into consideration when performing this ritual ceremony: these are mentioned in this session. The required materials, and the different roles of househould members are mentioned in this session. The clan history is also spoken about in this session.
Puma language is used frequently. It is also spoken Nepali language in some particular situations.
Mr DBR is the resident of Pauwasera VDC. He has good knowledge of Puma ritual, so the Puma team has called him for the Puma ritual ceremony description, that is called 'khaliphenma'.
DBR is the shaman of the Diplung village. He performs the ritual customs in the society. His clan is Henyongcha.
GR is a student and also a social worker.His clan is Mithahang Palung. He has helped the Puma team with different data collection.
He is the research assistant for ethnography in the Puma team.
