Description:This session contains a bundle of summaries of different Puma myths dealing with origins: e.g., the origin of Sumnima and Paruhang, the origin of the sili dances, of the phagu ritual, etc.
The aim of the project is to provide a rich linguistic and ethnographic documentation of two highly endangered but almost totally undocumented languages in eastern Nepal, Chintang and Puma. These languages belong to the Kiranti family of Tibeto-Burman. Chintang is spoken by the Chintang Rai in Chintang Village Development Committee (VDC) of Dhankuta district. Puma is spoken by the Puma Rai in Diplung, Mauwabote and Pauwasera VDCs, to the south of Khotang bazar in Khotang district. Both these districts are situated in the eastern hilly part of the country.http://www.cpdp.uzh.ch
Some major origin myths are summarized here: The stories of Sumnima and Paruhang and the myth of the culture hero Hechakupka and his sisters Tongwama and Khiwama are summed up in this file. It also includes the origin myth of the sili dance which is used in the Phagu festival. The ways of performing sili are explained. Further, the myth recounting the origin of the Diplung is presented in outline.
English and Puma languages are used in this file.
