Title:Child4 Recording Cycle04 Session06 Child Language Development
CLLDCh4R04S06
Documentation of Chintang and Puma, two Kiranti languages in East Nepal
Coverage:Nepal
Date:2004-07-22
Description:Sixth session of the fourth monthly recording cycle with LDCh4 (child 4 in the Child Language Development study).
The aim of the project is to provide a rich linguistic and ethnographic documentation of two highly endangered but almost totally undocumented languages in eastern Nepal, Chintang and Puma. These languages belong to the Kiranti family of Tibeto-Burman. Chintang is spoken by the Chintang Rai in Chintang Village Development Committee (VDC) of Dhankuta district. Puma is spoken by the Puma Rai in Diplung, Mauwabote and Pauwasera VDCs, to the south of Khotang bazar in Khotang district. Both these districts are situated in the eastern hilly part of the country.
In the beginnig of the session, LDCh4 plays alone and seems a bit passive. He tries to break the wall of his house and his mother and MKR ask him not to break it. Then he plays with Kuluk shaking the long bamboo and jumping on it. 28.01 to 29.00: LDCh4 and Kuluk are pretending as if they are tractors. Then LDCh4 and Kuluk play riding on the bamboo. While playing with the bamboo, LDCh4 falls down and gets angry. Then he hits his sister with a stone and his mother asks him not to do so. Then again LDCh4 and Kuluk start hitting the bamboo with the stone using different kinds of abusive words. LDCh4's mother is afraid that they hit each other with stones and verbally interferes. After some time, they feel very hot and they go down in the shade so they are not seen for a while. And then LDCh4's mother asks LDCh4 and Kuluk to come up and play in the shade. They obey. Here LDCh4 and Kuluk break the kernel of a peach. At the end of this recording, LDCh4 plays feather blowing with Kuluk. Kuluk collects feathers and gives them to LDCh4 asking him to blow on them. After that both of them play blowing the feather.
All the utterance are in Chintang except less than 10 utterances in Nepali.
