Description: | In the beginning the singer introduces himself. He says, “I am happy to record my song. My name is Marial Bol, from the village Kucuk. This village is inhabited predominantly by the Aruet clan. This clan is part of the Twic section of Dinka. In terms of administration, Kucuk belongs to the boma of Majak Pagai, part of the payam Pannyok, part of Turalei County. My composer is Deng Deng Maluil; his nickname is Deng Thuaar”. Then he starts his song, by praising his uncle Marup, singing that he is an intelligent man. He is always right. He is respected by everybody in the clan. People like to listen to him. He sings that they nominated Marup to lead the clan. He also praises his other uncles. Then he adds: “Our clan makes many tethers. My uncle always takes his axe and climbs trees looking for good tethers.” There is a lack of tethering sticks, because they have so many cows. His bull makuei/mayen resembles a fishing bird (eagle). He praises his bull mayen/makuei, which he describes as follows. “It is a bull from the Luac area, with long legs and beautiful horns. It is taller than a giraffe. It is yellow like a ripe berry. [The Dinka word for this berry is malaat; it tastes sour.] Achan and I will search for rope to tether cows. Youth of Payiek, we should buy bells for our bulls. Alal kou is where we take our bulls for grazing. The Alal area is full of good grass for cattle. Nyuol Matong is our herder. Our only problem is the Nuer who always raid our cows. After that he praises his cousin Kodok Chan, saying that he is a handsome man. He is bright as an elephant’s tusk. Kodok loves Aliyi Athuai. Elders of Payiek sat in the cattle byre to discuss Kodok’s marriage. The mother of Aliyi is giving some advice to her daughter. The women of Payiek are ready to take the girl. Aliyi Athuai I am your brother-in-law. Finally he thanks Nyayiek Mayen, of the Paguor clan, for helping him by paying the composer. | |
