Description:Videorecordings of two female early NGT signers engaging in free conversation in a pub.
Logbook. The meeting of S117 and S118 at 11 May 2011. Location: The recordings are on a terrace of a pub in 's Hertogenbosch. It was a suggestion of S118 to meet at this pub. The subject of conversation between S117 and S118 is about yoga, lifestyle, having energy or not and more. Technical information: The light changed during the recordings. The recordings started early in the evening and ended late in the evening. The duration of the recordings is about 1,5 hours. Observation: Interpretation of the recorder: I got the impression that S117 and S118 were not quite at ease. I'm not sure they do like each other very much. I thought they were friends and invited them to participate to ERC Interact,. But they aren't friends, even though the deaf community is small and they life in the same region. At the end of the conversation S117 and S118 asked me if I could stop the recordings. After finishing the recordings they told me they were tired and got a headache. S118 told me she would prefer not to be asked anymore for participation to sign research in the future. Note: While starting the records I noticed that I missed a lockpiece to affix the camera on the tripod. So I used a hair ribbon to affix the camera. It worked.

Information from filled in backgrounddocument by S118: S118 does know her conversation partner S117 for a very long time, since the puberty, since they were about 15 years old. They met for the first time with school swimlessons or when they had a competition/game with swimming. S118 is born deaf. S118 participates to the deaf community by deaf friends, the Meeting Centre for the Deaf, work and she wrote in Dutch: 'I am part of the deaf community'. S118 defines her sign skills as good. (Deaf recorder Merel van Zuilen: I should define S118's sign skills as very good). S118 did'nt reply if she does know other sign languages. The parents and grandparents of S118 are/were hearing. S118 doesn't have deaf family members. In S118's hearing environment there were awkward people, no people who used sign language, in the past. Only friends and people at school used sign language.
