Title:Ahanta1
Coverage:Brazil
Mato Grosso
Description:The narrative tells the story of Ahanta, a mithical being (a type of pacu fish), in the time of Akingi (“bat”) before the come-to-existence of the Upper Xingu peoples. It is one of the two stories about the origin of manioc (Manihit utilissima), with all the manioc sub-species known by the kuikuro, the by-products made by them, the technologies used to plant, harvest and process manioc. As usual and as it is characteristic in the obtention of goods as cultivated plants, rituals and songs, the manioc was obtained by humans from the people of a hibrid being (animal and human), in the case of this narrative the people of Ahanta, who inhabit the deep waters of lakes and rivers, through and as a consequence of a marriage (and its dissolution) between the being and a human woman. There is another story (akinhá) on the origin of manioc, where the manioc-giver is the deer (asã).
