Sunjata Keita was one of the legendary leaders of the ancient Manding (Mali) empire, which stretched over present-day Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Ghana. The book tells how Sunjata was born the son of a king, but he was a cripple, unable to walk. His mother was a hunchback and mistreated by her community. Sunjata had a troubled childhood and adolescence. One day, he stood up and started to walk. The book details Sunjata's youthful exploits, his bravery as a soldier, and his success as a ruler and hero.
