| «Comment le ciel récompense un homme honnête» raconte comment, en temps de disette, un homme à qui sa femme demande d'aller voler du maïs dans les champs des voisins s'y refuse obstinément. Le troisième soir, il ramasse des cailloux au bord de la rivière pour faire semblant d'avoir volé quelque chose. À son retour, les pierres se sont miraculeusement transformées en pépites d'argent: sa persévérance dans l'honnêteté est récompensée par les bodhisattvas. Le Leitmotiv du récit est l'adage qui veut que «ce que les gens ne voient pas, le ciel le voit»: le ressort des actions ne doit être ni l'occasion (qui fait le larron), ni le besoin, mais l'impératif moral (ne pas céder au penchant qui porte vers le vol, la maltraitance...). | ||
| “Reward: the reward of an honest man, or: The heavens are watching” tells the story of how, in times of food shortage, a man whose wife asks him to steal corn from the neighbours' fields stubbornly refuses to do so. On the third night, he collects stones from the riverbank to make it look like he has stolen something. When he returns, the stones have miraculously turned into silver nuggets: his perseverance in honesty is rewarded by the bodhisattvas. The leitmotif of the story is the adage that ‘what people do not see, heaven sees’: the motive for action should be neither opportunity (which makes the thief) nor need, but moral imperative (not giving in to the inclination to steal, abuse, etc.). | ||
