| Description: | Ce récit fondateur explique l’origine du rituel funéraire «Sikee». | |
| This founding story explains the origin of the ‘Sikee’ funerary ritual. A brother returning from a long hunting expedition is not recognized by his sister on her wedding day, and is frowned upon like a beggar. She only realizes who he is when he storms out. She tries in vain to stop him, and dies of grief. At cremation, her body won’t burn until the brother comes to the funeral pyre to speak words of reconciliation. In reference to this mythical tragedy, the ‘Sikee’ ritual was performed at the funeral of a woman who had left her natal home: her consanguineous relatives—collectively representing ‘the mother’s brother’, avu—visited the household that had taken her in, subjecting them to ritualized reproach. | ||
