Description:Archi21 Corpus is a LETEC corpus organized as an IMS-CP archive. We define a Learning & Teaching Corpus as a structured entity containing all the elements resulting from a content and language integrated learning situation, whose context is described by an educational scenario and a research protocol. The core data collection includes all the interaction data, the productions of the course participants, and the tracks, resulting from the participants’ actions in the learning environment and stored according to the research protocol. More details about a LETEC corpus an ist structure at : http://lrl-diffusion.univ-bpclermont.fr/mulce/metadata/mce_LETECorpus-en.pdf
The corpus includes the pedagogical scenario, described in several formats, the research protocol, participants' online interactions and reflexive sessions (structured in XML), the list of participants and licences of use. The metadata file of the learning of the teaching and learning corpus Archi21 Building Fragile Spaces (idMulce : mce-archi21-letec-all) is in line with the OLAC and Dublin Core standards. The corpus itself (mce-archi21-letec-all-CP.zip) is organized as an archive in an IMS-CP format. All the reflexive sessions and studio workshops completed in the Second Life environment were rtranscribed and are structured and made available in the SID part. The analyses carried out by researchers on this LETEC corpus are available on Mulce website (http://mulce.org). They are classified as distiguishable corpora.
The European Lifelong Learning Archi21 project (Architectural and Design Based Education and Practice Through Content and Language Integrated Learning Using Immersive Virtual Environments for 21st Century Skills)seeks to provide innovative methods and materials supporting second language learning through a content and language integrated approach (CLIL) merged integrated with architectural and design education and practice and the use of emerging ICT technologies. It project aims to inform the development and creation of a CLIL model to add diversity and flexibility to existing methods and forms of language learning. It also intends to modernise curriculum development and to offer best practice guidelines based on architectural and design case studies. Building Fragile Spaces was the first pilot course for Archi21 project. It was a hybrid CLIL design studio held on 7-11 February 2011 and designed by architecture tutors from l'Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture Paris-Malaquais and language tutors from Université Blaise Pascal, Clermont-Ferrand, France. The distance French and English L2 activities of the studio incorporated both architectural and linguistic objectives and were conducted in the synthetic world Second Life.
The 'Building Fragile Spaces' course was organised as a five-day intensive design studio. This is a typical face-to-face course within the field of architectural education: professionals work in small groups with students, over a short period, developing design ideas. The CLIL pedagogical scenario for the course was designed by architecture tutors from Ecole National Supérieure d'Architecture de Paris-Malaquais and language tutors from Blaise Pascal University. The architectural focus of the design studio was the design and fabrication of the immersive environment in Second Life for the Archi21 project. This stemmed from a conviction that 3D synthetic worlds are an exciting new design field for architectural experimentation. They allow the conception of innovative architectural projects between multiple users in the same space, providing opportunities for collaborative projects. They also allow building to be visualised in new and effective ways. The course had the project-oriented goal of developing working models for spatial archetypes, landscapes and identity to be employed as both its technical infrastructure and spatial, graphic expression. The pedagogical scenario for the language activities included introductory sessions to Second Life and to building collaboratively in the synthetic world, and a series of group reflective sessions inworld.
'Building Fragile Spaces' involved eight female and nine male students, aged between 21 years and one month and 25 years and 8 months. Students ranged from first year undergraduates to second year Masters' students. French was the mother tongue of nine of the seventeen students. The mother tongues of the remaining eight were: Spanish, Chinese, Italian, Korean and Arabic. The participants were divided into four workgroups. This division was thematic and linguistic: each workgroup received a different architectural brief and had a dominant second language. Two workgroups, studying the themes of '(e)spaces' (GE) and 'scenarios' (GS) in Second Life had English as their target language (ESL) and two groups studying the themes of 'avatars' (GA) and 'land+scapes' (GL) had French as their target language (FLE). One French and one English language tutor participated in the course alongside a French architecture tutor and an American architecture tutor. The students and the architecture tutors were co-present in the physical classroom. However, the English and French language tutors met with the students inworld, connecting to Second Life at a distance.
