Description:Translation (Seng Pan) The story is about a poor man and monkeys. A long time ago, a poor man did shifting cultivation for his living. His parents already passed away. He was alone and poor. When he returned home from the field, no one guarded his field. It was the time when the paddy was ripe enough to harvest. Not only paddy but also all the other fruits and vegetables were ready to pick. When the time he came to the field to harvest the paddy, the monkeys already ate all. Others' paddy fields weren't destroyed and eaten. The monkeys only ate the fruits and crops in his field. Since there was nothing left, the poor man planned to dig taros at last. So, he went to the field. When he arrived there, he couldn't find any taros. The monkeys already dug out all. When the man saw it, he was so upset. So, he put soybean paste on his body and lay down on the field. At that time, the monkeys came to his field again. A monkey yelled, "A man is lying here!" All the monkeys gathered and discussed what to do with the man. Although the man heard it, he decided to let the monkeys do whatever they liked. The man was so depressed since they ate all the food, which was enough for him for a year. He had nothing left. So, he just kept lying there. At that moment, the monkeys carried him. They brought him along to the top of tall trees. Although how dangerous the places were, he decided to go along with them. The monkeys took him to their cave which was at the top of a huge rock. They had fixed that cave as their home. The man was carried to that cave and placed inside it. He was so worried about where the monkeys put him in. He wondered he was on a tree or a rock. And he was so afraid. So, he opened his eyes a little and looked at the monkeys slyly. At that time, the monkeys were discussing what they would do to him. In the old days, monkeys, trees and humans could understand each other's language. After a while, the man shouted as he was so scared. There were mountains of gold and jewellery around him. The country of monkeys was wealthy. The man quickly grabbed some gold and jewellery, including diamonds and ran back to his village. When he arrived home, one of his neighbours asked, "My friend, what did you do to become this rich?" The man answered, "While all of my crops were eaten by the monkeys, I lay down on the field by wearing soybean paste on my whole body. The monkeys carried me to their cave. I also decided to go with them no matter what happened to me, and I followed them. But when I reached their place and opened my eyes, I saw a lot of gold and jewellery. However, I was so scared at that time. While they were discussing me, I suddenly screamed. And the monkeys ran away." After his friend heard about it, he was eager to become rich like the man. So, he also rubbed his body with soybean paste and lay down on his field. The monkeys also took him. However, when they reached a tree, he was so scared. So, he said, "Monkeys, I would fall down. Please hold me tight!" But the man was dead there. Therefore, our elders said there were nats (evil spirits) on the huge rocks.
