Description:Translation (Rita Seng Mai) The story I am going to tell you is about two orphan brothers. Once in a village, there were two orphan brothers. The big brother was strong enough to do work, but he was stupid. On the other hand, the younger brother was intelligent. The big brother always asked about his brother's ideas. There was nothing he did with his own idea. He did everything that his younger brother said. Whatever his younger brother told him to do, he always agreed with him. One day, the younger brother told him, "We are getting older and older. We should live our own lives. Don't do whatever I say. Let's grow some plants on our own separately." They both decided to work on their own farms. The big brother asked his younger brother, "I have cultivated. What should I do now? What should I grow?" The younger brother said, "Scrape the buffalos' horns and spread them through the field." The elder brother was so stupid that he believed every word his brother said. He really spread the particles in his field. The younger brother planted many kinds of vegetables in his field. After a few months, the elder brother asked him, "My younger brother, what kind of vegetables are growing in your field now?" He answered, "Yes, some kinds of vegetables are growing. What about you, my elder brother?" The elder brother said, "There are many horns in my field." The younger brother thought, "There are many horns? How?" Then, he went to check his brother's field. He saw that there were many buffaloes in his elder brother's field. He was jealous and thought to himself, "There are only vegetables growing in my field. But here, there are many buffaloes! What should I do to get all of those buffaloes?" Then, he pounded some rice and mixed it with water. And he spread it on the buffaloes. All buffaloes turned white. He went back to his elder brother and said, "My brother, all the white buffaloes are mine. All the black buffaloes are yours." The elder brother didn't complain about anything and said, "Okay." Suddenly, there was heavy rain. All the white pounded rice on the buffaloes was gone because of the rain. Some buffaloes stood under the tree and took shelter not to get wet. Only some rice powder was on their bodies. All the buffaloes became the natural black. So, the younger brother didn't get any buffaloes. When they got home, the elder brother thought, "My brother told me that all the white buffaloes are his, but there are none. I can see some rice powder too. Maybe he is trying to con me." He got angry at his younger brother and cursed him. All the rice powder on the buffaloes was gone through the rain. He believed that his younger brother lied to him. So, he cursed him. Some powder was still on some buffaloes. It was like squares. The younger brother was speechless. He didn't know what to do. He didn't get any buffaloes. All the buffaloes were black, so his elder brother got all. Then, he thought, "It is not good if my brother has all these buffaloes. He will be rich! I can't let it happen." He found a way to kill his elder brother. The jealousy overwhelmed him. One morning, he went to his brother and said, "My brother, your sister-in-law is dead. We need a coffin to put her corpse. So, let's go into the forest to get some wood." After they had made a coffin, he told his brother, "Can you lie down there? I would like to check whether this coffin fits my wife or not." As soon as the elder brother lay down, he quickly closed the lid. And he tied the coffin firmly. He thought, "Just die inside there." His elder brother begged him, "Please, open the lid." But he didn't open it. So, the elder brother kicked the lid with force and opened it. He was upset with the thought, "My brother is trying to kill me." Then, he called his younger brother and said, "This time, you lie inside it. Let me see if it is fit for your wife or not." As soon as he lay down, the elder brother tied the lid and the coffin with strings and ropes. He thought, "My younger brother is planning to kill me. He wants to monopolize everything. He bullies me. I won't open the lid." He tied it tight. A few minutes later, the younger brother shouted, "Open the lid! Open it!" But no one opened it for him. So he tried his best to kick it. It was all vain. It was so tight that he couldn't open it. The elder brother thought, "I will just let him die in this coffin." He dragged it to the waterfall and hung it at a tree on the waterfall. He thought of letting his brother suffer. He thought to save him if he regretted his actions. Then, he went back home. After four or five days, the elder brother went there and checked if his brother was still alive or not. He told a squirrel, "Go and check inside that coffin if my brother is still alive or not. If you hear any sound, come and tell me." But the squirrel misheard it as "Cut the coffin down the waterfall." It misheard it. So, it cut the rope down. Then, the younger brother in the coffin was dead. There is Nsu nat (nat which has great jealousy). The younger brother became Nsu nat after he died. Kachin people still worship Nsu nat, the younger brother who died after violent death. Kachin people still offer offerings to Nsu nat. In some villages, people offer offerings to Nsu nat as a culture. Since then, there have been white buffaloes and black buffaloes. It's because the two brothers applied rice powder on the buffaloes. Since then, there have been some white and black patterns on cows' and buffaloes' bodies. Transcription (La Ring) Ya ngai hkai na maumwi gaw jahkrai ma hkan nau a lam re.
