Description:Transcription (Rita Seng Mai) The story I am going to tell now is about a cat and a mother cow. A long time ago, there were a cat and a mother cow in a house. The mother cow went around to eat food in the daytime. At night, she went back and stayed in a shed. And there were many mice in that house. The mouse usually made the cow annoyed. The mouse bit her tail or ears at night. So, she couldn't sleep well. She couldn't stand it anymore. So, she asked the cat for help. She made a promise with the cat. She told it, "My friend, you are the one who usually catches and eats the mouse. So, please kill the mouse. I will give you a cup of milk every night. If you drink a cup of milk every day, you will be stronger than before. Then you can kill the mouse." When she told the cat to catch the mouse, the cat said, "I can't catch the mouse. I am not strong enough to catch it." So, she told the cat that she would give a cup of milk every day. Then the cat always came to drink milk. The cat got stronger and tried to catch the mouse. At first, there was only one big mouse. Later, there were many small mice too. The cat caught and ate little mice. There had a big mouse left to catch. But the cat usually came to drink milk since there were many mice left to catch. It drank a cup of milk every night. The cow told the cat, "My friend, seem like you are not strong enough to catch the mouse even though you drink a cup of milk every night. The mouse still bites my tail or my ears." Then the cat replied, "Okay, okay. I will try to catch the mouse." It thought to itself, "I could catch the small mice even when I drink a cup of milk every day. But there's a big mouse left for me to catch. I will try my best to catch it." Since that night, it took two cups of milk to be stronger than before. It drank one cup of milk before it slept. But it couldn't finish it up. Then it thought that it would drink another cup of milk the next morning. So, it left it and slept. When it woke up in the morning, it checked its milk. But there wasn't any milk left. The cat took two cups of milk from the cow the next day too. It drank one cup and left another cup. But there wasn't any milk left in the next morning. That thing continuously happened for two or three days. Then the cat thought, "Who drank that milk?" Actually, a big mouse drank that milk. So, the mouse became stronger and stronger. The cat couldn't catch that mouse since the mouse was stronger than it. The mouse made the cat annoyed and could bite and torture the cow than before. Their plan was a failure because of the cat's greed. Our elders used to say this story. Transcription (Lu Awng) Ya ngai bai hkai na maumwi gaw nyau hte nga kanu a maumwi re.
