Description:Translation (Htoi San) Once upon a time, a man had two wives. He had his first wife and his second wife. Both of his wives had a child each. The second wife also had a child. The first wife had a child too. The second wife was so wicked. As the second wife was so evil, she said to the first wife, "My sister, shall we go fishing today?" She lied to the first wife about fishing and brought her to a pond. That pond was quite deep, and the younger wife pushed the elder wife into the pond while fishing. The first wife passed away. After the elder wife died, she became a sea turtle. One day, the younger wife went fishing again and caught that sea turtle. Then she put it in the pot. After that, she started the fire. When the water was hot, the sea turtle cried due to the heat. Then the second wife realized that the sea turtle was the one whom she pushed and killed. Thus she asked the first wife's daughter to raise the fire. "Go to the kitchen and kindle the fire." When the daughter got to the kitchen, the sea turtle spoke. "My Child, Mom is very hot here." When she heard that, she knew it was her mother, so she killed the fire. The younger wife got angry and told her, "Why did you stop the fire? I told you to raise it, didn't I?" Then she hit the child. So the child raised the fire again. Her mother said, "My child, You suffer for me. But I am feeling hotter." So her daughter killed the fire. As a result, her stepmother beat her again. Therefore, the child had to raise the fire, and her mother's sea turtle died in the pot at last. The whole family ate the meat of the sea turtle. The sea turtle's daughter was told to eat her mother's meat, "Eat that!" The girl replied, "I don't want to eat this." Then she did not have it. The girl collected all the bones left from eating and buried them in the corner of her yard. From that place, a massive beautiful tree was grown. That tree grew such pretty fruits. The girl sat under that tree and always cried there. The tree mother always saw her daughter cry. One day, a young king held a wife-choosing event. The second wife did not let the girl go to that event. Her stepmother deterred her from going. So the mother tree, the girl's mother, knew about it. The mother tree brought the girl to her place. Then she did the makeup for her daughter. "Pluck a leaf," told the mother tree. After plucking, the leaf was turned into shoes, clothes, and other beautiful things. The girl got all these and was ready to go, but the stepmother saw her. The wicked wife mixed a basket of rice with sand and ordered the girl, "You pick the rice from here and don't go anywhere today." So the girl wept as she could not go to the event. When she was crying, many birds from the tree came to her and then picked up all the rice. The birds picked the rice so quickly that she could go to the wife-choosing event. The young king had many girls to select, so he threw a flower garland into the girls. When the flower garland was put on one's neck, the king would marry that girl. What a coincidence; as soon as the girl entered the hall, the flower garland was put on her neck. When the young king went to see who she was, he saw the girl whose stepmother did not let her go. In the end, the young king married that girl. Transcription (La Ring) Moi kalang mi hta da ndai la langai gaw da num lahkawng lu ai da. Dai shaloi she ndai num kaji hte num kaba nga ai da.
