Description:Translation (Mike Tu Awng) This is a story about crow and barn swallow. This story is from the time when birds could still talk in human language. There was a very huge, shady, and tall tree. In that big tree, swallows made nests on it and hatched their young on it and they lived happily. When they were living very happily, a crow with very beautiful white feather came to them. Then the crow said to swallows, "My dear friends, I want to live with you, so I will make a nest on a branch above you", the crow asked permission to them. The swallows thought that the crow would have good characters just as it had beautiful white feather. The swallows gave permission to the crow by saying, "Dear crow, you can make a nest where you want in this tree." That's way, the crow moved to the tree. Then, those swallows laid eggs in their nests. And, they went out to look for food every day. They came back in the evening. When all the swallows went to look for food, the crow stayed back in its nest. When they had gone, the crow wandered through all the nests and ate all the eggs. When they came back, there was no eggs left. They were puzzled after two or three days of incident like that. The swallows were puzzled and asked the crow if it ate their eggs while they were gone looking for food. Then the crow said, "How can I eat your eggs? The moment you all go out, I go out to look for food, too, and just before you arrive back, I get back just a little earlier". When the crow said that they believed him. After that, they continued laying eggs as usual even though they suspected the crow. One day, when they were about to go out to look for food, one swallow stayed back to see whether or not it was the crow that stole their eggs. They let one swallow to keep watch and the rest went out to look for food. When they had gone, the crow attacked and killed the swallow that was guarding the eggs, then brought it to its nest and ate it first. After eating that swallow, the crow went back to nests and ate all the eggs it found. When the swallows returned in the evening, they couldn't find any eggs in their nest. They let one swallow to guard their eggs, but now they couldn't find that swallow too. Because of that, they were all puzzled and shocked. They wanted to talk about the incident with the crow again, but they didn't see evidence so they were hesitant to tell it to the crow. After that they agreed that two swallows would stay guard on their eggs instead of one. Then, on that day they let two swallows to guard their nests and eggs. It was already time for hatching young swallows. It was time to hatch young chicks. When they let the two swallows to guard, the crow talked to the two swallows by saying, "You two must be hungry. Why are you staying on guard all day long? You two go and look for your food, and I will keep watch on your eggs and chicks". When the two swallows heard that, they believed the crow. They went out to look for food. When the two had left, the crow really wanted to eat the chicks so it ate all the chicks. After eating all the chicks, the crow just stayed like that. When all the swallows returned, the crow was acting as if nothing had happened. When the swallows got back, they saw no one, they didn't see the two guards. They didn't see the eggs, they didn't see the chicks, thus, they were all shocked and puzzled. After a few moments, the two guards that went out to look for food came back. All the swallows realized that it was the crookedness of the crow the moment the two guards said that the crow asked them to go out to look for food. After realizing that they continued laying eggs as usual. One day they tested the crow again. They agreed that no one will stay guard their eggs but instead of guarding them, they would all go out to look for food. They would go out together only for a short while and they would come back immediately. Then, they all went out without leaving anyone to look after their eggs. They all left then they all came back in just a few moment. When they came back, they all learnt that the crow was eating all the eggs and chicks from their nests. When they saw that, swallows were very angry. The swallows said to the crow, "Oh crow, we thought that your mind must be pure just as your feather is so white. That's why we allowed you to stay with us in this tree. Now, look what you have done. You are very cruel to us". Even though the swallows were small and the crow was much bigger than them, they were many more and there was only one crow. Then, they all fought the crow together. They all attacked the crow together and drove it out. They continued, "If your mind was pure just as your feather is, you would stay long in this tree with us. But, now your mind is totally different from your feather or appearance. Your mind is so dark and devilish. Because of that may your feather, too, turn into black. The swallows chased and attacked the crow as they shouted those words. That's why there is no crow with white feather but black. And to this present day, the crow's feather is black from that day on.
