Description:Barnabas Leiau talks to Luke Gitakulu about traditional marriage customs in the Reef Islands, sitting in the open-sided community house in the village square in Otelo.
The project documents oral texts on traditions and daily life in the Reef Islands, covering 8 villages and 73 speakers ranging in age from 15 to 93. The materials were recorded in September-October 2015.
Barnabas Leiau talks about traditions in relation to marriage and raising a child to maturity, prompted by questions from Luke Gitakulu. He describes how marriage partners would be chosen by one's parents and the customs related to engagement and marriage, to pregnancy and childbirth, and traditional maturation rites for children. They then discuss why such customs are being observed to a lesser extent today than in the past.
Åshild Næss is recording. Barnabas Leiau speaks while Luke Gitakulu asks questions. The text was transcribed and translated by Philip Paikai and Åshild Næss.
