Description:John Mark Das and Luke Gitakulu discuss how pana is grown, sitting in the community house in the village square in Otelo.
The project documents oral texts on traditions and daily life in the Reef Islands, covering 8 villages and 73 speakers ranging in age from 15 to 93. The materials were recorded in September-October 2015.
John Mark Das talks about how to grow pana (lesser yam), what different varieties there are, and about the cultural importance of this crop as an important food in traditional ceremonies.
Åshild Næss is recording, John Mark Das is speaking while Luke Gitakulu is asking questions. The text was transcribed and translated by Philip Paikai and Åshild Næss.
The field researcher leading the project and managing the recording and transcription sessions.
Aka Tumwä Musa. From Otelo. Has previously worked for the Äiwoo Bible translation team. Worked as Field Assistant for the data collection in Otelo, Nyimââ, Laato and Nyiväle villages and participated in recruiting participants and explaining the project to local leaders, making practical arrangements, as well as participating as interviewer in recordings.
Aka Tumwä Gladys. From Otelo, married to a woman from Nopali
From Otabwe, married to a woman from Ngadeli. Lived in Honiara from 1974 to 2006, working in the police force from 1980. Has been living on Ngadeli since 2010.
