Description:Marlwa are song-giving pandanus spirits and there are several song-sets with this name. For the purposes of this project this particular set of Marlwa songs is identified with the "Mimih and yawkyawk" songs originated by Crusoe Guningbal and today owned by his sons Owen Yalandja and Crusoe Kurddal. This recording contains eighteen song items (8 different song texts in Kunwinjku) and 6 itpiyitpi song items (3 different song texts, in Kunwinjku and Mawng) performed by Crusoe Kurddal and Kevin Gameraidj (Marlwa) and Lindsay and Dick Gameraidj (Itpiyitpi), didjeridu Rick Nabegeyo.
The classical song traditions of Western Arnhem Land are amongst the foremost examples of verbal art in the nine endangered languages of the region, but few people are now competent to perform or comment on them. Typically performed in multi-lingual social contexts, song texts demonstrate unusual linguistic features such as mixtures of languages and a high proportion of esoteric and intimate vocabulary. We will collect, transcribe, translate and analyse song texts and discussions about songs by contemporary performers, and where relevant repatriate and document archival recordings, making our research results available to communities via a network of local digital repositories.
Isabel Bickerdike is a postgraduate student at the University of Melbourne, supervised by Linda Barwick and Nick Evans. She was aged 25 in 2006 and was resident at Warruwi from May-November 2006. She is Ngal-bangardi skin, Wurrik clan (Kun-winjku tribe?, given by Mary Gurden-gurden, this is her mother\'s clan).

First language is Kunwinjku; also speaks English well. Dick Gameraidj was born 1.7.1949 at Ingbarlmun. He spent most of his childhood on Goulburn Island living with his mother and stepfather, and attended the local primary school. As a young man he trained as a builder at the Technical School at Yirrkala. After a few years building houses on Goulburn, he moved to Minjilang, where he was reunited with his father, David Gameraidj, who passed on his repertoire of Itpiyitpi songs (the Mawng equivalent of Jurtbirrk) to him before he died. Dick is now teaching his father\'s songs to his own sons at Minjilang.
First language is Kunwinjku; also speaks English well. Lindsay was born in 1978 in Darwin, and has lived most of his life at Minjilang on Croker Island. Lindsay is one of a younger generation who plays music from two cultures. He composes contemporary music, and sings and plays western instruments in \'The Bininj Band\', as well as continuing on in the Itpiyitpi tradition of his father Dick, and his grandfather David. He is learning Jurtbirrk from sitting in on song sessions in Minjilang.
