Description:This story was recorded by Elena Kalinina and Nina Sumbatova from Galina Ivanovna Kandakova in 2006. A first transcription and translation were made by Elena Kalinina with the help of G.I. Kandakova. In 2017, Natalia Aralova time aligned the transcription, glossed the text, and checked questions with G.I. Kandakova. Galina Ivanovna was walking with two friends from Polina Osipenko village to her mother’s house in Vladimirovka (17 km). It was late in the evening after a Komsomol meeting, in late November (I asked Galina Ivanovna in 2017 when exactly the event took place). On the river, they saw a car and ran after it. But the car left without stopping. When they reached home, they were told that no cars could be going there at all, because the ice was not yet thick enough on the river.
This project focuses on the documentation of Negidal, a highly moribund Northern Tungusic language spoken by at most a handful of individuals on the Amgun' and Lower Amur rivers in the Russian Federation. The language comprises two dialects, Upper and Lower Negidal, of which the latter might already be extinct. The project will result primarily in an extensive corpus of interlinearized texts from the Upper dialect together with accompanying audio recordings.
