Description:Piwen and Mary Clara discuss the story Piwen just told about an island that sank into the sea, so that Mary Clara is prepared to retell it in Koro. All the women on the island did not know how to deliver their babies. They were pregnant and when they died the baby would be born. One day a woman came from Mainland Manus and showed them how to give birth without dying. The spirits of the women who had already died were angry and they sank the island into the sea and it became a reef. Titan story. Recorded in John Kris's haus boi with Piwen and Mary Clara facing the road and bush with the beach behind them, the village to their left and Chopokoleheu to their right.
Koro is an Oceanic (Austronesian) language spoken by several hundred people on Manus and Los Negros islands, approximately 200 miles off the north coast of the Papua New Guinea mainland. This documentation consists primarily of recorded narratives and conversations in the Papitalai dialect, spoken in Papitalai, Riu Riu, and Naringel villages.
