Description:Pauline Kewin tells a story about when she was a baby and the war came, in Tok Pisin. Pauline was born on Bipi island. When she was 2 months old the war came, and her family paddled to the mainland and hid in a cave. There were war planes and bombs falling everywhere. They kept hiding in the cave. Pauline became malnourished and after the fighting ended her father took her to the hospital where she recovered. Recorded inside John Kris's haus boi, with Pauline Kewin and Kristine Pat facing the road and the bush, with the beach behind them and the village to their left.
Koro is an Oceanic (Austronesian) language spoken by several hundred people on Manus and Los Negros islands, approximately 200 miles off the north coast of the Papua New Guinea mainland. This documentation consists primarily of recorded narratives and conversations in the Papitalai dialect, spoken in Papitalai, Riu Riu, and Naringel villages.
Rose Katip Kewin' mother. Grew up on Bipi Island but has lived in Papitalai a long time.
