Description:This story is about two orphans raised by their uncle. The uncle loved them dearly, but their aunt--the wife of the uncle--hated them very much. Raising the orphans in the family made the life of the uncle miserable as he had to quarrel with his wife almost everyday. The uncle decided to take the children to the forest and left them there. The children were taken care by an old men, and were give a (magic) potion. They grew up as a handsome man and beautiful woman, who then married each other. When they were back to the village, their marriage was regared as a sin, and they were punished to death because of that. Because of the potion, they couldn't be killed and this led to the realisation by the people that one could not take somebody's life. Instead of the death penalty, they were asked to perform a ritual.
The project aims to set up a comprehensive archive of the Rongga language and culture as a resource tool containing the core data and references on which further studies, analyses, and practical language-community programs may be based. The three-year project (2004-2006) has produced a variety of data as part of the archive. It includes audio and visual recordings, (ethnographic) notes based on interviews and observations, as well as anthropological or linguistic descriptions. At the conclusion of the project, a grammar and a basic dictionary have been already completed. More information on the project homepage can be viewed online at http://rspas.anu.edu.au/linguistics/projects/iwa/Web-Pages/RonggaPRoject%20-%20Home.htm.
