Documentation of mythology and shamanic songs of the Nahua, Panoan speaking people of Peruvian Amazon

Coverage:Peru

Description:Tortoises used to be nimble and live in large groups. One day they trick a jaguar into swinging on a vine in the forest. The jaguar falls and dies and he is eaten by the tortoises. Later, his brother comes looking for him and when he finds out what the tortoises have done he breaks their legs thus preventing them from walking. The tortoises plead for help from a passing wasp who stings their legs and thus releases them slightly but since this time all tortoises have lived a solitary and slow paced life in the forest.
