Documentation of mythology and shamanic songs of the Nahua, Panoan speaking people of Peruvian Amazon
Contributor:Macofene
Coverage:Peru
Date:2001-08-22
Description:A young man takes his wife to the forest with his grandparents in order to look for achiote (red body paint). Strange phenomena such as lightning flashes, bad dreams and meat that tastes of nothing warn the grandfather of a bad omen. They are attacked by the roanafa the next day and the grandfather is killed. There follows a series of skirmishes in which the relatives and two sons of the dead man retaliate and ambush and kill many roanafa. The roanafa try and kill them but they lose them in a spiny patch of forest and eventually they escape and plunder the knives, machetes and chacira of the dead roanafa.
